The unique contours of Te Whau on Waiheke Island form the foundation for this home by Herbst Architects, designed to perch gracefully within its surrounding landscape. Planted meadows, stone, and winding pathways work in quiet harmony, giving the impression that each element has always belonged.

Details

Grass meadows soften the threshold between built form and wild terrain, gently framing the house while acknowledging its presence within the natural environment.

Stone boulders and naturalistic material junctions create a relaxed, organic character – one that invites wandering, pausing, and absorbing the historic vistas.

Boundary planting provides privacy without enclosure, blending seamlessly with neighbouring properties. A palette dominated by native New Zealand species supports local wildlife and birdlife while reinforcing the landscape’s distinctly indigenous identity.

The result is a landscape that does more than support the house: it completes it.
